April 28: Tech Comm Panel Discussion

Outlines of people with chat bubbles

At some point in your life, you were probably asked what you wanted to be when you grew up. Maybe you answered firefighter, teacher, astronaut, police officer, or veterinarian. Although all honorable professions, perhaps you (like many others) were drawn to the field of technical communication.

Join STC-MGL on April 28 for a tech comm panel discussion. Come listen to current technical communicators describe how they discovered their careers and how STC supports them now. Joining us on the panel are Wes Schoenherr, Alison Phillips, Maryann Bowen, and Joana Donovan.

Meet the Panelists

Wes Schoenherr

Schoenherr is a Technical Content Developer at KMC Controls. He is primarily responsible for creating documentation for new hardware solutions being developed by the company, updating the documentation for a SaaS product as new features and improvements are made, and creating a knowledge base/help system by converting and revising Adobe InDesign PDF documentation into MadCap Flare topics with both PDF and HTML5 outputs.

Alison Phillips

Phillips is a Team Leader for Customer Literature Translation and Publication Production at General Motors. She is part of a team that manages owners’ manuals and service information translations along with digital and print delivery for GM customer information, globally. As a team member, she is pursuing process improvements and innovative ways to deliver the highest quality information to meet GM’s zero-zero-zero vision and become the most inclusive company in the world.

Maryann Bowen

Bowen retired in 2020 as a Senior Manager, Education and User Experience at Saphran, Inc. She was responsible for all facets of user documentation and training, including for new client implementation projects, new/updated feature rollouts, and custom client upgrade releases. She contributed to internal operations and systems documentation and participated in training/onboarding new employees and participated in quality assurance testing and prepared release notes and any necessary instructional materials for each software release. Furthermore, she prepared and conducted a monthly user webinar highlighting release features, ways to address specific user issues, and relevant industry topics.

Joana Donovan

Donovan is studying technical communications at the University of Central Florida and is the recipient of a 2022-2023 STC Scholarship. When she’s not in class, Donovan is a Senior Administrative Assistant. One of her responsibilities is to develop the Information Technology, Cybersecurity, and Business Continuity Policy while her company transitions into an independent entity. She hopes to also earn the CPTC designation.

And in case you’re wondering, Schoenherr wanted to be an archeologist, Phillips a veterinarian, a wildlife biologist, a landscape designer, an architect…, Bowen a teacher of some kind, and Donovan a stockbroker or veterinarian.

Please join us as we learn how they each found their careers in technical communication instead!
